Response to an application by BP Australia to construct fuel storage tanks at Birkenhead

The response to South Australia's Development Assessment Commission argues that the expansion of BP's Birkenhead tank farm should not be approved as
a. International evidence exists (most recently from Buncfield in the UK) to demonstrate that the effects of explosion on nearby residential areas is catastrophic.
b. EPA measured levels of benzene and toluene 1km from the site support the view that concentrations are already unacceptably high in residential areas adjacent to the site and that further expansion is likely to breach regulatory levels
